Elizabeth Takahashi Barth, Chair
Born in Japan, Elizabeth moved to Portland when she was four and has been a Portlander ever since. Honoring her love of southeast Portland, she recently put down roots on the border of Happy Valley with her husband and two dogs. Elizabeth works for the Multnomah County Health Department as the Healthy Worksites/Healthy Communities Coordinator where she helps organizations adopt practices, policies, and strategies that support a culture of wellness. She has also worked for the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization and ODS Companies (now MODA Health). She is a member of the Asian and Pacific American Network of Oregon and has spent many nights serving Japanese meals at her parents’ Lents neighborhood restaurant, The Takahashi Japanese Restaurant. Knowing where food comes from and the cultural, familial, social, and physical nourishment that comes from growing, cooking, and enjoying it has been influential to Elizabeth. She is honored to serve the Farm as a board member.
Jennifer Dynes, Vice Chair
A longtime resident of the Lents neighborhood, Jen spent many past years participating in Zenger’s programs. She raises two wonderful kids, now teens, in connection with the farm. Jen has a master’s degree in art and creative writing. She is a filmmaker, a farm natural and a Dobro slide guitar musician. Jen envisions a future for Zenger where the farm programs to continue to grow into the very fabric of the neighborhood, a place where the current children learning at Zenger will someday bring their own grandchildren. She is excited about the nationally acclaimed work of Zenger Farm and the urban farming legacy it brings to all of the people of Portland.
Eric Engstrom is a Principal Planner with the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. Eric has been a planner with the City of Portland for 15 years, working on a variety of land use and strategic planning topics, including infill development strategies, urban natural area protection, and zoning code reform. He has a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from Portland State University, and an undergraduate degree from the Evergreen State College. Eric is currently leading the development of the Portland Plan, and an overhaul of the city’s comprehensive plan. Eric grew up in rural Washington County.
Kelly Klock has spent her career in the natural foods industry, as an entrepreneur and a consultant. In 2002, she founded Bear Naked, an all-natural brand of granola products. Following the sale of Bear Naked to Kashi in 2007, Kelly remained involved in the sector serving as a Board member to Happy Family, a leading brand of organic food products, recently acquired by Group Danone. Kelly and her husband, Dan, are the current owners of Bridgetown Natural Foods, a leading producer of natural, organic, and gluten-free food products servicing many innovative and growing brands. Her passion and involvement at Bridgetown is product Innovation and developing Wellness Programs designed to benefit Bridgetown’s 300employees. Bridgetown is located next door to Zenger Farm; one facet of ‘Bridges to Better Health’ is the partnership between Zenger Farm and Bridgetown Natural Foods, created with the intention to facilitate community involvement and exposure to the farm through work-related incentives. Outside of work, Kelly currently spends the majority of time with her two young children, and enjoys being active through Crossfit.
Jesse was born and raised on a small farm in Eastern Washington where he developed a love for the land and the bounty it produces. Though he eventually settled in the city, he has woven his fondness for good land stewardship into his personal and professional life. In fact, it is at the root of his work as business attorney specializing in food, beverage and agricultural industries. As a partner with the Davis Wright Tremaine law firm, Jesse helps those working with the land—directly and indirectly— to find optimal ways to connect with one another and carry out their businesses in a successful and sustainable fashion. He and his wife, Carmi, are raising their three children on the next best thing to a farm; a small backyard garden in NE Portland coupled with time spent in their off-the-grid cabin nestled deep in a Klickitat County,Washington forest. Zenger Farm manifests Jesse’s core values; helping children, families and businesses connect the dots between farms, land stewardship, animal husbandry and healthy food. He is happy to be a part of the team, and is just as willing to jump on the tractor to plough a field as he is to provide legal counsel.
Kristi McFarland, Secretary
As Chief People Officer at New Seasons Market, Kristi is in charge of protecting and maintaining culture, ensuring people can grow- and foster their full potential in support of the company’s mission. Kristi brings more than 20 years of human resources experience to New Seasons, building strong company cultures, developing people and helping to create a great customer experience. Before New Seasons, Kristi was leading human resources at Peet’s Coffee and has also held HR positions at The Gap, Williams-Sonoma and Banana Republic. She joined the Zenger Farm seeking an opportunity to combine her passions for education, food and community. In her spare time, Kristi is a seasoned yogini, avid cook and loves all things outdoors- especially when snow is involved. Speaking of snow, Kristi spends her holidays in Vermont with her family, where she indulges in her favorite meal of all time: cinnamon maples sugar pancakes.
Michele grew up in Great Falls, Montana, received BAs in Psychology and Communications from the University of Montana in Missoula, and worked in restaurant management before heading South to Dallas, TX where she spent 9 years in advertising and branding, carving a niche in restaurant and non-profit marketing. Her longing for mountains, rivers and green spaces propelled her back to the Northwest. With former clients like the Dallas Museum of Art and the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Michele brought her love of connecting audiences to the spirit of educational and entertainment destinations with her to Zenger Farm. Her involvement with Zenger feeds her interest in connecting people with healthy food, land stewardship, and community building. Michele now works in marketing for Burgerville restaurants. She lives in North Portland with two dogs, three cats, one 11 year-old and a man brave enough to share a house with them. She loves summer days of kayaking, gardening (though an admitted newby), and hiking the NW and winter days of cross-country skiing. Any time of year, she enjoys gathering over meals cooked together with family and friends.
Annette Mattson works for Portland General Electric in Government Affairs and Public Policy. Her job entails working with government and private sector entities and government officials in the areas of economic development, franchise contracts, and land use& transportation. She has represented PGE as Chair of the North Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce and as Chair of the Clackamas County Economic Development Commission. In her life as an elected official, Annette has served as a school board member in the David Douglas School District in East Portland since 1995.Annette has served as the President of the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) and was a member of the Board of Directors for eight years. Her past volunteer resume includes the Coalition for School Funding Now!, the 122nd Avenue Re-Zoning study, the Powell Valley Road Water District Budget Committee, the Multnomah County Charter Committee and various schoolboard campaigns. Annette moved to Oregon at the age of 20 after growing up on a family farm in Minnesota. She completed her B.S. in Human Development at Warner Pacific College. She and her husband, Jeff Reardon, have been members of the Zenger Farm Egg Cooperative for two years. They have four grown daughters.
Nick was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. In pursuit of warmer climates and his accounting education, Nick found his way from Wisconsin to Oregon. After attending the University of Portland, he landed at a local accounting firm where he worked almost exclusively in the winery and vineyard industries of the Willamette Valley. In 2010 he branched out and found himself at Perkins & Co; quickly establishing roots as our resident winery, brewery and restaurant expert. Beyond his food and beverage expertise, Nick is also an integral member of Perkins’ Legacy Planning Practice Group, and he is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Portland. He handles all of this responsibility in addition to raising his four children with his wife. In his spare time, Nick enjoys camping with his family, attending his kids’ sporting events, listening to blues music, watching Green Bay Packer football, and serving as head landscaper at his home.
A native Oregonian, Ashley has a BA in Public Relations from University of Oregon and nearly ten years experience as a public relations specialist, with a focus in media relations and event planning/management. She has been fortunate to support several national clients in the natural and organic food industry – in fact, the same ones she grew up with – including Bob’s Red Mill and Tillamook Cheese. She is grateful to have serendipitously joined the Zenger Farm board where she can share her personal passions for nutrition, health and sustainability. She is inspired by the unity that occurs when a community comes together to enjoy their own nourishing traditions, with a focus on healthy food. In her spare time, she enjoys practicing yoga, being in nature, cooking at home and exploring the delicious and never-ending food scene found in the Pacific Northwest’s bounty of restaurants.
Born in India, Narendra came to the United States in 1986 to attend Brown University. After a career as a software designer at Microsoft Corporation, Narendra and his wife Machelle decided to devote their time, money, and energy towards an effort to re-imagine our food system around the principles of Permaculture Design and Biodynamic agriculture. They purchased a 58-acre farm just outside Portland, Oregon and founded Our Table Cooperative which is a vertically integrated food to farm cooperative that is experimenting with new ways to grow, process and sell food
Since 2013, Marty Wall has served as Vice President of Sales for Stumptown Coffee Roaster, and feels lucky to be part of a company with an important mission and great values. Previous to Stumptown Coffee, Marty worked for17 years in the beer business, the last 12 years as Vice President of Sales for Widmer Brothers Brewing and Craft Brew Alliance. Marty received his bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA where he was a member of the men’s basketball team.Basketball continues to be a passion for him. Currently, he volunteers as a coach for youth basketball at the Clutch Players AAU basketball program. Marty is very pleased to serve on Zenger Farm’s Board of Directors, where he has the opportunity to giveback to the youth in his community. He is particularly fond of Zenger Farm’s programs that educate youth on how to grow, cook and eat healthy food.
